From 22 to 24 January 2025, The Centre conducted a child labour case management training in Fungurume, equipping participants with essential skills to support children and families in remediation programmes. Case managers are at the heart of The Hub for Child Labour Prevention and Remediation, acting as key points of contact to ensure children receive continuous guidance and support. Only those who successfully complete The Hub’s comprehensive training can qualify as case managers.
Building Expertise for Effective Remediation
With more children entering the remediation programme through TFM’s long-term investment, the demand for well-trained case managers within the TFM mining concession continues to grow. This training aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge of children’s rights and case management, preparing them to take on this critical role effectively.
The training brought together a wide range of attendees, including representatives from The Hub’s founding organisations, the Fungurume gender, family, and child municipal service, the Tenke administrative office, the civil society consultation framework, as well as teachers and independent professionals. Seventeen participants engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions aligned with national and international standards.
Expanding the Case Manager Network
To assess their readiness, participants took an evaluation at the end of the training. Nine individuals (five women and four men) achieved strong results and qualified for junior case manager status. Of these, six have already been assigned children and will receive continued on-the-job training, mentorship, and assessments as they progress toward full accreditation.
With this latest training, The Hub now has 34 junior case managers and four fully accredited case managers, ensuring a growing network of skilled professionals dedicated to supporting children in need.
About The Hub for Child Labour Prevention and Remediation
The Hub’s child labour remediation programme is supported by funding from the private sector and the Fair Cobalt Alliance. Launched in 2022 and managed by The Centre for Child Rights and Business, The Hub unites six local CSOs to provide targeted, long-term support for children engaged in the worst forms of child labour in artisanal copper and cobalt mining communities in the DRC. It collaborates with schools and the government to ensure alignment and sustainability. Its case manager training programme has established a robust local network of child rights practitioners, consisting of 29 accredited child labour remediation case managers. Furthermore, The Hub conducts regular training for local government departments, CSOs, and mining cooperatives on child labour prevention and remediation.
