Every year, “Chunyun” marks the world’s largest annual human migration. Hundreds of millions of workers travel home across China to reunite with their families — often the only time they see them all year. It is a moment of rest, reconnection and reflection. For many, it is also the moment they decide not to return to the factory.
Similar dynamics play out during Tết in Vietnam and the Lunar New Year across other sourcing countries. Once the holidays end, factories face intense pressure to restart production quickly. Recruitment ramps up fast. New workers are hired at scale. And with speed comes risk.
This post-holiday hiring drive is one of the highest-risk periods for child labour. Weak age-verification processes, the use of labour intermediaries or dispatch agencies and pressure to fill vacancies can all lead to children slipping into the workforce.
This is why child labour prevention and remediation strategies cannot be reactive. They need to be in place before recruitment surges begin.
Strong systems make a real difference. This includes:
Clear and enforced age verification procedures
Responsible recruitment practices and oversight of labour agents
Trained supervisors and HR teams who know how to spot risks early
Practical, child-centred remediation processes when cases are identified
For brands and suppliers alike, this is not just about compliance. It’s also about protecting children, supporting families, and avoiding harm during predictable, high-risk moments in the production cycle.
To support suppliers during this critical period, The Centre for Child Rights and Business is running a live, online Learning Lab training on January 20, focused specifically on Child Labour Prevention and Remediation (CLPR). The session is delivered in Chinese and designed to be practical, affordable and immediately applicable for factory and HR teams.
With Lunar New Year fast approaching and recruitment pressures already building, now is the time to act. Registration closes soon, and places are limited.
Preparing early is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk, ensure that the post-holiday return to work does not come at the expense of children’s rights, and of course, to worry your buyers less.
