A Small Investment, A Lasting Impact: How “Suhada” Theshakthi Tea Smallholder Transformed a Community

A simple yet powerful investment by the “Suhada” Theshakthi Tea Smallholder Society has significantly improved the lives of children in its community—thanks to The Seal Challenge.

The Seal Challenge, part of the Mother and Child-Friendly Seal for Responsible Business, is an initiative by The Centre for Child Rights and Business. It encourages businesses across the tea supply chain—plantation companies, smallholders, factories, brokers, exporters, brands, and retailers—to develop innovative solutions that support children and families in their business ecosystem. Winning proposals receive either seed funding or technical support to turn their ideas into reality.

The Impact: Better Facilities, Brighter Futures

One of the Seal Challenge winners, “Suhada” Theshakthi Tea Smallholder Society, tackled a critical issue at a local primary school serving over 150 students—more than 100 of them girls. The school had just one broken latrine, forcing children to wait in long queues and share inadequate facilities.

With funding from the Seal Challenge, the tea smallholder helped build new latrines, creating a safer, more hygienic environment. Teachers are relieved, and students—especially girls—can now focus on learning without the discomfort of poor sanitation.

This initiative is more than just a construction project; it’s a lasting investment in children’s well-being and a testament to how businesses can drive meaningful change. It has also strengthened the tea smallholder’s reputation within the community, showcasing the power of responsible business.
