Vietnam Factory Enjoys the Benefits of Hiring Young Workers as Part of Youth Development Programme

The Young Worker Development Programme, implemented by The Centre for Child Rights and Business, is an initiative that provides young people with access to decent employment opportunities within formal supply chains. It is a part of the Work: No Child Business project, which receives funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The programme's target audience is young workers between 15 and under 18 at risk of informal or hazardous work, including involvement in child labour situations. It offers skill development opportunities, regulated working hours, fair pay and safe jobs suitable for their age. At the same time, the programme helps factories build a multi-skilled, young workforce through responsible hiring and sustainable management practices.

The programme builds the capacity of factory HR and management to responsibly hire and manage young workers over the long term. This includes practical training for factory management to understand young workers’ rights, implement the programme effectively, and review policies and practices related to recruitment, contracts, retention, training, and performance appraisal. The programme also ensures compliance with local laws and the company's codes of conduct.

“By investing in youth, these factories are taking significant strides towards supporting vulnerable youth by providing them with access to decent work, skill-building and a stepping stone in their careers. Thanks to this programme, these young workers can work in a safe, supportive environment while factories gain the confidence to manage and nurture this group. It’s really encouraging to see how this programme is being recognised by a growing number of factories for its long-term benefits,” said Ines Kaempfer, CEO, The Centre for Child Rights and Business.
