Child Labour Remediation

The Centre’s child labour rapid response service is available in all project countries and where we have a network of accredited service providers. Our rapid response service focuses on two dimensions: the concerned child and the business. It includes fast and reliable support to the child, the family and the factory, farm or production site and includes a comprehensive set of actions to assist companies with a remediation process from start to finish.

Our remediation considers the best interest of the child and includes the following steps:

  1. Assessing the situation of the child within the context of the concerned production site; in most cases this take place on-site and within 72 hours of notification

  2. Discussing solutions with parents, children and companies

  3. Defining possible remediation solutions based on the initial suggestions such as vocational schools, or other training options including a budget for enrolment and monthly living stipend

  4. Defining roles and responsibilities of brands, factory/production site managers/farm owners, children, parents, service providers and The Centre

  5. Supporting the child, the company and the supplier throughout the entire remediation process

  6. In cases involving young workers in child labour situations (e.g. in hazardous work, or working excessive hours and night shifts), we support employers in creating solutions to protect young workers and eliminating child labour situations. We also work closely with employers on cases involving young workers in child labour situations (e.g. in hazardous work, or working excessive hours and night shifts) and support them in creating solutions to protect young workers and eliminating child labour situations. This includes but is not limited to identifying non-hazardous positions suitable for young workers, ensuring hazardous positions are off limits to young workers or rendering them non-hazardous where possible

  7. Ongoing monitoring throughout the entire remediation, including regular updates and reports on progress

  8. Companies can sign an MOU on child labour remediation via our Child Rights in Business (CRIB) Working Group  or contact us for case-by-case remediation. We currently provide child labour remediation coverage in Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Egypt, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Turkey, the US and Vietnam. Please contact us if you need support to conduct an assessment or would like more details.
